Walk to Cure Diabetes

JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes is one of the fastest growing fundraising events in the world. Each year, over 500,000 people “walk to cure diabetes” at 200 JDRF Walk locations in over a dozen countries. Funds are raised by individual and team walkers obtaining donations from family, friends and neighbors. Funds are also raised through corporate sponsorships and the sale of JDRF paper sneakers at retail outlets. Last year, more than $86 million was raised worldwide for diabetes research and research education through JDRF’s Walk program.

About JDRF

JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D) by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D.

About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults at any age. It occurs when the body’s own immune system destroys the beta cells in the pancreas. The onset of T1D has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. T1D strikes suddenly, causes lifelong dependence on injected or pumped insulin, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications.

Type 1 Diabetes vs Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a metabolic disease in which a person’s body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively. T2D is usually diagnosed in adulthood, but there is a growing number of cases of T2D in children due to an increase in childhood obesity. T2D can be treated with diet and lifestyle interventions, as well as oral medications.
